Well, we went ahead and did it again ... yeah, we built another pond.
Only this time we went all out. We made it 32x17, with lots of
waterfalls.

It started out by digging a
VERY BIG HOLE!
They had to bring in a Bob Cat tractor to dig
and they did that in one day.
Thank goodness!!!

Then they put in a liner
and secured it with 2x4's so it
wouldn't slip. Then they started
spreading dirt all around it.

After that was done they brought
in the filter tub, which is pictured
way in the back. That's where I wanted
the waterfalls to be.

Okay. Now things are starting to shape
up a little. The slate is going around it
and it's beginning to look like something.

Now the remaining dirt goes behind the
pond and they filled the whole
thing in with cobblestone. From the back of
the pond is the neatest view. From that
position, you're actually even with
the water line.

Then came the wonderful waterfalls. I think
there might be a total of six that actually
flow. The sound they make is glorious. I
don't even need one of those sleep machines
because the sound of the water is right outside
my bedroom. That's great!

Now it's time to put in some plants. We added sedum around the Japanese Weeping Maple. That way next year it will hopefully be all green and red around there.

We continued planting around all the cobblestone so that by next year it might be filled in. We have some grasses in the back, some Cotoneaster in the back by the waterfall and on the right side. Some Spiraea to add some pink and a Red Blood grass, which doesn't get very tall, just to add some more color. Grasses are always pretty anywhere.

We also made a bog garden behind the pond
with a liner in it so we can keep it full of water
all the time. In the liner we planted some pink spikes,
some marsh marigolds and some irises, as well as a
couple other things. Most of the things are tall plants
so it gives height to the back of the pond.

Then we plopped in some Siberian Irises, which are very blue and they started blooming within one week because there's so much sun back there. They really looked pretty. We also put some Parrot's Feather in the waterfall and some purple Rush.

A beautiful orange Canna.
I've never seen a Canna such a bright orange.

Then, of course, the water lilies. Wow! You should see how pretty it is. It really started looking like a pond!!

And to finish things off with the decorating, I've had
this water ornament (a rose) for the past two years
waiting to put in the pond so the water could drip from it.
Well, I now have a pond to put it in.
It looks very happy, don't you think?????

Now there's just one final step; the fish. Russel went back and forth,
from our Royal Oak house to our new home. He used my son's pickup
truck and a horse trough, emptied the old pond and got the water down
so low he could catch the fish and carried them to the trough,
He had to make several trips because the fish are so big only two
or three would fit in at a time. Then he carried them from the truck
in a fish net and placed them gently into their new home.

I think when we brought the fish over from our other house,
they thought they had died and gone to heaven. Two days
after we put them in, they spawned and we're just now seeing
the results of that "first" spawning. On June 15 they spawned
again and we're starting to see these itty-bitty babies in the algea.
You can tell they're koi because they have all these colors.

And this is what the pond looks like today. I just went out and
took this picture. The plants in bloom are: water hyacinths,
pickerel rush, 5 different water lilies, parrots feather, the red
feather grass, the two clumps of fountain grass behind the pond
the red baron grass, and my beautiful pink lotus.
It's wonderful!!!

And that's kind of how our new pond was built. Now you'll have
to see the residents that are living there.
Our pond is gonna be just great next year; it's gonna be full of new families..

Thanks for taking a look at our project. It was quite an undertaking
and I wanted to share it with other pond enthusiasts.

Stick around for the next phase. We're building a 4-seasons
room to overlook the pond and I'm sure you'll want to see that progress..
